Mara Ellison studied dentistry at the University of Bristol, where she completed the Bachelor of Dental Surgery programme. Her training covered biomedical sciences, oral disease, diagnosis, prevention, restorative dentistry, periodontal care, endodontics, treatment planning and supervised clinical practice. During her dental education, she developed a particular interest in restorative dentistry, endodontics and periodontal health, including the way diagnosis, disease control and treatment sequencing can influence long-term outcomes for patients.
Her university training combined academic study with supervised patient care, giving her experience in assessing oral health problems, developing treatment plans and considering the relationship between preventive and restorative approaches. She also gained experience in interpreting clinical findings, evaluating treatment options and understanding how factors such as a patient’s medical history, oral hygiene, disease risk and ability to maintain treatment can affect clinical decisions.
After graduation, Mara worked in general dental practices in Bristol and Somerset. Her clinical experience included restorative treatment, periodontal management, endodontic problems, preventive dentistry, dental emergencies and the assessment of patients presenting with dental pain or changes in their oral health. General practice brought her into contact with patients with a wide range of routine and more complex dental needs and gave her experience in adapting treatment plans to different clinical situations.
Her work in general dental practice also involved managing patients with different medical histories, levels of dental anxiety, expectations and long-term treatment needs. This included evaluating when treatment was required, when a condition could be monitored, when further investigation was appropriate and when referral to another clinician or specialist service should be considered.
Mara’s professional background also includes experience in community dental settings. In this environment, prevention, communication and adapting care for patients requiring additional support were particularly important. Her work involved considering not only the technical aspects of treatment, but also a patient’s ability to understand, access and maintain dental care over time.
