Digital impressions capture three-dimensional surfaces of teeth, gingiva and other accessible oral structures with an intraoral scanner instead of conventional impression material and trays. The scan can produce virtual dental models for restorative, orthodontic and implant workflows and can be transferred electronically to design or laboratory systems. Accuracy depends on the clinical situation, scanning strategy and accessible anatomy. The term describes optical surface capture and the resulting digital record, not every type of dental scan or the CAD process that follows it.
