Smoking cessation

Smoking cessation is the process of stopping tobacco smoking, a change with particular relevance to oral cancer risk, periodontal disease, wound healing and implant or surgical care. Dental teams can identify smoking status, provide brief behavioural support and direct patients to dedicated cessation services or pharmacologic support where appropriate. The intervention targets tobacco dependence rather than a single oral condition, and successful cessation often requires repeated support because relapse can be part of the change process.
