Periodontal ligament 3 articles

The periodontal ligament is the specialized connective tissue occupying the space between tooth-root cementum and alveolar bone. Its collagen fiber bundles suspend the tooth within the socket, transmit occlusal forces and contain vascular, neural and cellular components involved in sensation and remodeling. The ligament is central to periodontal attachment and orthodontic tooth movement. It differs from gingiva, cementum and alveolar bone, although those tissues together form the supporting apparatus around a tooth.
