Salivary glands are the tissues that produce and secrete saliva into the oral cavity. The major parotid, submandibular and sublingual glands are complemented by numerous minor glands distributed through the mucosa, each contributing differently to fluid volume and composition. Dental and oral-medicine assessment considers duct openings, swelling, pain, xerostomia and gland-related disease. These secretory organs are distinct from saliva itself, which is the fluid released through their ducts into the mouth.
