Remineralisation describes the return of mineral to partially demineralised tooth tissue before structural breakdown becomes irreversible. Saliva, calcium and phosphate availability, fluoride exposure, plaque acidity and dietary patterns all influence the balance between mineral loss and gain, particularly in early non-cavitated enamel lesions. The relevant endpoint is biological arrest or mineral recovery in early lesions, not reconstruction of cavitated tooth structure after surface integrity has been lost.
