Oral pathology is the field concerned with diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial tissues and with the interpretation of their clinical and microscopic features. Work includes assessment of mucosal lesions, jaw pathology, salivary-gland disease and biopsy specimens, often linking clinical findings with histopathology. The specialty helps establish or refine diagnoses rather than representing a treatment technique. Oral surgery may provide biopsy or excision specimens, but the pathological specialty is concerned with diagnosing disease from clinical and microscopic evidence rather than performing the surgery itself.
