Behaviour change in oral health refers to the process of establishing or modifying habits such as toothbrushing, interdental cleaning, dietary choices, tobacco use and attendance. Lasting change often depends on capability, motivation, opportunity and realistic goals rather than information alone. In dentistry, behavioural approaches can include self-monitoring, goal setting, problem solving and reinforcement, with the clinician supporting the patient rather than simply issuing instructions; the focus is sustained action outside the surgery as well as short-term compliance.
