Volunteering Organisations

Work the World

Work the WorldWork the World are the leading organiser of tailored healthcare placements overseas, with programmes running in Africa, Asia & South Africa. Dentistry students who travel with Work the World get the opportunity to equip themselves with clinical skills and knowledge as they encounter cases that would otherwise only remain a reality in textbooks.

For the majority of people in the locations in which we operate, oral and dental health is not considered a priority. Even though lifestyle, diet and location in many of our destinations create problems for people’s teeth and gums, countless people wait as long as possible before seeking help. Advanced pathologies, severe decay and poor oral hygiene are inevitable.

We have strong relationships with our partner hospitals and clinics in each destination, offering good opportunities for practical work in scaling, extractions, fillings and root canal treatment. Specialist placements in oral cancer and maxillofacial surgery are also available. If you are interested in learning more about dental healthcare overseas, split placements are also an option to allow you the chance to compare private and public facilities in some of our destinations. Students interested in pursuing a placement abroad are encouraged to contact or visit the website,

bridge2aidBridge2Aid, is a dental volunteer charity that works in East Africa, which have reached more than a million people through its dental volunteer programme. They provide emergency access to pain relief to those who need it through their Dental Volunteer Programme (DVP).

B2A's chief executive Ian Wilson explains: 'With over four billion people worldwide with no access to safe, basic emergency dentistry, training local health workers to treat their own people is a key strategy to alleviating the weight of this burden'.

'Dental pain causes more lost work days each year than malaria! With over 200,000 people in East Africa alone experiencing pain each day, we are pushing ahead with training to provide access to emergency dentistry to half a million people in 2010 – that's one every 60 seconds.'

Bridge2Aid offers this support to an area in need of dentists, just one of the places in the world included in the 70% without access to a dentist.
